Impact Newsletter – Fall 2024

As 2024 winds down, we want to thank you for supporting Cancer Support Community’s vital mission. We are honored to be here when cancer patients, caregivers, and families need us most.

Our year end fundraising campaign is in full swing! Please make a donation today and help us continue to provide invaluable support to people facing cancer in our community. Our friend Christopher M. George and CMG Financial have pledged a generous $40,000 matching gift through the end of the year. That means your donation will be matched, dollar-for dollar, going twice as far for our incredible community.

Your support fuels our mission and brings hope to countless individuals facing cancer. Together, we’re making a difference!

Warm regards,

Lori Orr, MS, CMPE

Interim Chief Executive Office

Leaving a Legacy: Our values live on through $1 million gift

David Bohne and Thomas Bye have pledged an incredible legacy gift to Cancer Support Community. Their dedication to supporting people impacted by cancer, like themselves, will live beyond their years. “Our gift is a great source of personal fulfillment. This community is so vital not only for those dealing with a cancer diagnosis but also relieves family and loved ones to a certain extent. It gives them a respite,” says David. Learn more about David and Thomas’ story here.

CSC and BASS Study Published

Our collaboration with BASS Cancer Center is featured in the Journal of Oncology Navigation & Survivorship. The study abstract, “Impact of Psychosocial Distress Screening Partnership with Cancer Support Community SF Bay Area in an Ambulatory Community-Based Cancer Center: A Retrospective Cohort Study,” was accepted for publication and presented at the AONN Annual Conference in Las Vegas. This partnership is expanding CSC’s reach to more cancer patients in need of support. Special thanks to CSC Board member Patty Falconer (R) and CSC Professional Advisory Board member Wendy Keck Ennis, BSN (L) for their incredible work.

Building the Future of Cancer Care

Did you know that your donation to our capital campaign could be matched? A generous anonymous donor has pledged a $5 million match and we are well on our way. That means every donation counts double, propelling us closer to our goal of building a groundbreaking new support center. Please contact Libby directly or visit our website to learn more about how you can support this transformative project.

Successful Gala in the Grove!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make Gala in the Grove a success! Thanks to our sponsors, committee, attendees, and volunteers, we raised vital funds for Cancer Support Community’s free programs for cancer patients and families. See photos from the event here.

Special thanks to Mission Moment speaker Emily for sharing her incredible story. Emily is a breast cancer survivor and recently finished her final semester at Berkeley Law. Diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer at age 25, Emily is part of the rising number of young adults who have had their lives turned upside down by cancer. Attending the Young Adults group and breast cancer support groups at CSC gave her a new community to lean on.

“Having cancer as a young adult is very lonely, so simply knowing others were out there made me feel seen. The young adults also helped me grapple with insecurities about not tending to a budding career and questions of mortality as a young person. It’s been essential in my journey, I’m so grateful to CSC.” – Emily, CSC Participant

Community Events Go Big in October

We are incredibly grateful to all of the organizations and groups who raised funds and awareness for Cancer Support Community during Breast Cancer Awareness month in October. Combined these events raised over $50,000 to support CSC programs. Special thanks to the Sacred Heart Prep volleyball team, Berkeley Bowl, Contra Costa Oncology’s Abracadabrew, Wildkat Fitness Zumbathon, Diablo View Rotary, and Handel’s Ice Cream!

Give to CSC through your Donor Advised Fund

Looking for a flexible way to make a contribution to Cancer Support Community? A donor advised fund (DAF) is a charitable giving program that allows you to combine the most favorable tax benefits with the flexibility to support your favorite cause. If you have a Donor Advised Fund, DAF Direct enables you to recommend grants to Cancer Support Community San Francisco Bay Area directly from your DAF. Simply fill out the form and you will be prompted to login to your Donor Advised Fund account to complete the transaction. Always review plans with your professional financial advisor.
